Orgins of the Torch Relay

As we watch China act and react to the protests surrounding the Olympic Torch relay, it's time to take a look at history. This short article from The New York Times describes the origins of the Olympic Torch relay ...

Somehow in the popular imagination, the relay began in ancient Greece or more realistically perhaps with rebirth of the Modern Olympic Games in 1896.

No, the torch relay began in Berlin - in 1936 - for the opening of Leni Riefenstahl’s film, “Olympia.” According to the article, the relay, held as tradition, began as a symbolic passing of the torch from Ancient Greece to Nazi Germany.

Imagine - the Olympic Torch being used as propaganda ... my how the world has changed???
